A precious remnant of rare dune-and-swale landscape, Ivanhoe South Preserve harbors a splendid black oak savanna habitat interspersed with permanently wet swales, providing rich habitat for a variety of flora and fauna.

Changes are underway at Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve in Gary, thanks to funding that will help transform this hidden gem into a hub for environmental education and community connection. Through a combination of grants from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, The Legacy Foundation, and Indiana American Water, Shirley Heinze Land Trust is enhancing the preserve with a new sidewalk and boardwalk, improved trails, a community space shelter, a dedicated parking area, as well as fencing and vehicle barriers.
Due to these exciting improvements, the preserve will be closed for construction through early fall. These upgrades are designed to support youth engagement, outdoor learning, and neighborhood revitalization—bringing more people into nature and more nature into people’s lives.
