H 2 Oh No!
On Saturday March 25th, join our free Water Quality Monitoring Training Program and learn how to test local water quality in the Little Calumet River-Galien watershed. By becoming a water quality volunteer, you will play a crucial role in helping to collect waterway data in Northwestern Indiana. Clean local waterways means cleaner ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, and a cleaner Lake Michigan!
Get ready to start your volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Training journey with Shirley Heinze. This opportunity is for volunteers seasoned & new, regardless of prior experience! Shirley Heinze staff will show you what procedures to practice when collecting samples and how to use provided equipment. We will be available to answer any questions you may have. The water monitoring season runs from April 2023 to October 2023 and is open to adults over 18 or children over 15 with an adult present. With this opportunity in mind, we warmly welcome you to join us regardless of your ability to volunteer with us. Let’s learn about nature together.
Purpose of water quality monitoring:
This training aims to engage community members, students, educators, and a diverse group of local partners across the watershed through monitoring of key sites, outreach and education around the importance of protecting water quality, and public events to cultivate community watershed stewardship. Generally, collected data plays a valuable role in framework that will be used to further develop conservation strategies for the watershed. As a result, this creates opportunities to further education and outreach around the importance of protecting local water quality. In fact, these activities include litter cleanups, native plantings and invasive management. This project will create student opportunities for internships and research fellowships that assist in training, data management, outreach and education activities.
