Volunteer Workday @ Ritchie

January 26 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CST

* Update:  This event was originally scheduled for January 12 but was changed due to inclement weather. January 26 is the rescheduled date.*

This January, let’s keep the momentum at Ritchie rolling!
A wide variety of native plant species thrive within the understory of J. Timothy Ritchie Nature Preserve, including some magnificent ephemerals in the spring. You can help us give them some room to expand by removing invasive species that have gradually amassed along the trail. We’ll be back on Friday, January 26th, cutting and strutting along idyllic Sand Creek. We’re taking out buckthorn, burning bush, multiflora rose, and other woody-stemmed invasive plants together. Let’s show this beautiful preserve, tucked inconspicuously between residential neighborhoods, some love!
Volunteer Dana Campolattara flags multiflora rose stumps after cutting them during the initial Ritchie workday in December.

Be prepared to work outside and dress appropriately for the weather. Conditions on the workday may be wet and will likely be cold.  Volunteer workdays are held in all types of weather, although if conditions become hazardous during or leading into the workday, we may be forced to cancel abruptly. Your safety is our first concern! We will provide all the necessary equipment, gear, and water. We encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle!

Please RSVP through the website form below. Question? Call the office at 219-242-8558 or email

Save time by filling out the online Volunteer Application prior to attending. We’ll also have hard copies for you at the workday. Come lend a hand, enjoy some time out in the woods with fellow volunteers, and learn about other meaningful opportunities with Shirley Heinze!
