Volunteer Workday @ Meadowbrook

As summer draws near, there are plenty of gardening and groundskeeping tasks that we could use YOUR help with! This includes jobs like weeding and transplanting seedlings—tasks that will make our home office look even better, improve the native habitat around the site, and advance our stewardship objectives.

We’ve narrowed our most pressing workday needs down to two different projects, both equally important:

• It’s been a busy few weeks here at Shirley Heinze, and our parking lot island has swelled with weeds (mostly invasive, all unwelcome) crowding our dogwood, chokeberry and serviceberry bushes. Help us weed the mulch—you won’t believe the difference when we’re done!
• Also over the past few weeks, we’ve received some valuable native plant seedlings from Kankakee Sands that can be used to propagate non-dedicated areas. The seedlings have grown rapidly and have swelled in the flat originally used to bring them to Meadowbrook. Help us split the seedlings into separate flats and planters so they have room to continue to thrive. Plus, it’ll be a nice practice run for our Grow One, Keep One transplant on June 23rd.

We’d love for you to come out and help us advance our stewardship goals. You choose the project—we’ll provide the snacks, water, camaraderie and natural ambiance!

Nature Highlights: Mature maple/beech forest; native snake, salamander and pollinator species; migrating songbirds such as the Scarlet Tanager and Baltimore Oriole; Indiana plant species beginning to really grow and blossom in the native garden.

What to Bring: Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle to refill.

Length: 3 hours. Most of the distance covered during this workday will be less than a mile.

Weather Policy: Rain or shine. Event will be cancelled in inclement weather. No rain date.

Amenities: Accessible outdoor restrooms and parking will be available.
