Volunteer Workday @ Lydick Bog

Lydick Bog is truly a place like no other. The rare bog habitat is home to many delicate and unique plant species, and all manner of wildlife and fungi thrive on the floating mat of peat- and the forest and field around it. Controlling invasive species in an ecosystem like this one is crucial to preserving the native diversity and quality of habitat in the preserve. You can be part of this important stewardship work! Come out and join us for another installment of workdays targeting garlic mustard at Lydick. Pulling the invasive plant is easy and satisfying. Help us restore the area and gain a deeper appreciation for this captivating bog ecosystem.

Although we’re in our third week, this volunteer workday is attached to our Garlic Mustard Week volunteer initiative. During the entire month, various Shirley Heinze preserves like Lydick will be host to workdays focusing on the removal of this destructive invasive species. It’s a chance to get some meaningful invasive management done across a wide swath of our service area.

Be prepared to work outside and dress appropriately for the weather. Conditions on the workday may be wet, and temperatures may be hot or chilly. Volunteer workdays are held in all types of weather, although if conditions become hazardous during or leading into the workday, we may be forced to cancel abruptly. Your safety is our first concern! We’ll also be hiking about a half-mile into our work site, so sturdy, comfortable boots are strongly recommended. We will provide all the necessary equipment, gear, and water. We encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle!
