Volunteer Workday @ Lydick Bog

March 8 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm EST

Lydick Bog is truly a place like no other. The rare bog habitat is home to many delicate and unique plant species, and all manner of wildlife and fungi thrive on the floating mat of peat- and the forest and field around it. Controlling invasive species in an ecosystem like this one is crucial to preserving the native diversity and quality of habitat in the preserve. You can be part of this important stewardship work! Come out and join us for the third installment of workdays targeting hard-stemmed invasive species at Lydick. We’ll remove multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle that’s taken root among the trees we’ve planted in the old farm field. Help us restore the area and gain a deeper appreciation for this captivating bog ecosystem.
Volunteer Tom Kosel adds bush honeysuckle to a brush pile at Lydick Bog.

Be prepared to work outside and dress appropriately for the weather. Conditions on the workday may be wet and will likely be cold. Volunteer workdays are held in all types of weather, although if conditions become hazardous during or leading into the workday, we may be forced to cancel abruptly. Your safety is our first concern! We will provide all the necessary equipment, gear, and water. We encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle!

Please RSVP through the website form below. Question? Call the office at 219-242-8558 or email

Save time by filling out the online Volunteer Application prior to attending. We’ll also have hard copies for you at the workday. Come lend a hand, enjoy some time out in the woods with fellow volunteers, and learn about other meaningful opportunities with Shirley Heinze!
