Volunteer Workday at Walner

This volunteer workday is part of our Garlic Mustard Week volunteer initiative. During the entire week, we will be hosting workdays focusing on the removal of this destructive invasive species at various Shirley Heinze preserves, like Walner. It’s a chance to get some meaningful invasive management done across a wide swath of our service area.

Nature Highlights: Keith Richard Walner Nature Preserve comprises an impressive and significant floodplain forest along the Little Calumet River. It’s home to herons, beaver, owls, deer and a wide array of other wildlife. Visitors can still see traces of the river’s original course winding through the floodplain. It’s definitely an ecosystem worth protecting, and encroaching non-native species (such as the invasive garlic mustard) must be carefully controlled in order to maintain ecological balance within this amazing preserve.

What to Bring: Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle as there is no potable water at this location.

Weather Policy: Rain or shine. Event will be cancelled in inclement weather. No rain date.

Amenities: Accessible parking will be available. No potable water.
