RESCHEDULED – Volunteer Workday @ Ambler, Part V

January 19 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CST

*Update:  This event has been canceled due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for February 9th.*
Join us for this season’s FIFTH invasive species workday at this unique and captivating preserve. The dense, ancient forest of Ambler Flatwoods is home to a multitude of native plant and animal species. We recently replaced a large section of the state-dedicated preserve’s boardwalk system so that visitors can continue to safely appreciate the flatwoods ecosystem. Following up on this improvement, we’ve been taking out some invasive species along the trail to enhance the quality of the native habitat even further. We began our efforts in November by restoring the head of the trail leading into the preserve from the north parking lot. We’ve pushed further into the ethereal forest over the past couple of months, targeting eight different invasive species. On Friday, January 19th, we’ll pick up where we left off, cutting autumn olive, Round-leaved bittersweet, and other unwelcome woody plants that, left unchecked, could outcompete the native flora. This rare boreal flatwoods habitat grows stronger and more resilient with each engagement!
Volunteers Bob Schact, Susan Proffitt, Larry Stanton, Dominic Yanke, Joe Brennan, and Claudia Wood pose in front of a brush pile created during a recent workday at Ambler.

Be prepared to work outside and dress appropriately for the weather. Conditions on the workday may be wet and will likely be cold. Volunteer workdays are held in all types of weather, although if conditions become hazardous during or leading into the workday, we may be forced to cancel abruptly. Your safety is our first concern! We will provide all the necessary equipment, gear, and water. We encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle!

Please RSVP through the website form below. Question? Call the office at 219-242-8558 or email

Save time by filling out the online Volunteer Application prior to attending. We’ll also have hard copies for you at the workday. Come lend a hand, enjoy some time out in the woods with fellow volunteers, and learn about other meaningful opportunities with Shirley Heinze!
