VOLUNTEER!! Seed Collecting at the Great Marsh
September 22 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT
Free

You can play a significant role in the restoration efforts of Shirley Heinze Land Trust by collecting seeds from native plants at our Beverly Shores Project Area. Meet at the corner of Beverly Drive and Constance Avenue at 10 am Central Time. Shirley Heinze team members will help you identify Joe-pye weed. Protective gear, including gloves and work goggles, will be provided.
Safety Information: Volunteers will be going off-trail in a marshy area with tall grass. Please wear sturdy shoes or boots, and take precautions against ticks and mosquitos by wearing long pants, socks, and optionally, gaiters. Some areas will be thick with cutgrass and tearthumb, making long sleeves adviseable and progress through the wetland occasionally strenuous. Bug spray will be available on-site. Additionally, the water table has increased these last few weeks and there will be areas of standing water. Rubber or waterproof boots are strongly recommended. Warm weather is anticipated during the workday, so please be sure to bring plenty of water as there is no potable water source. Please note that restrooms are not available at this location. Volunteers are encouraged to take breaks and work at their own pace—the Beverly Shores Marsh is a gorgeous area with plenty of incredible sedges, wildflowers, and waterfowl to admire!
If you have not volunteered with Shirley Heinze before, please sign up to be a volunteer and fill out our liability waiver online. Contact (219) 242-8558 if you have questions. Park on the south side of Beverly Drive just before the intersection of Constance Avenue as designated on the map below.
