Volunteer! Seed Collecting at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve
November 16, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CST

A few of the prairie areas at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve have been developed as a “seed bank” for our restoration efforts and offer an abundance of seeds for us to collect and sow at other preserves that need to be restored. Come out and be a part of our continuing restoration efforts to create a corridor of habitats for our native pollinators!
Join Preserve Steward Maureen Kolbusz, long-time and multi-talented volunteer and supporter of Shirley Heinze Land Trust (SHLT), and Volunteer Coordinator Christine Maloney for SHLT to learn about several important prairie species they’ll be collecting, their key identification features, and best practices for collecting and handling the seeds.
Meet Maureen and Christine in the parking lot at Meadowbrook promptly at 9am to hike with them out into the prairies. Feel free to stay as little or long as you’d like.
We will provide all the necessary equipment and gear, as well as granola bars and water, although we encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle.
Please dress appropriately for the weather. There may be poison ivy and ticks, but we will have insect repellent and TecNu on hand for your protection.
So that we can best plan for the event, please RSVP by calling the office at 219-242-8558 or emailing Volunteer Coordinator Christine Maloney at cmaloney@heinzetrust.org. For information about last minute cancellations, please check back Facebook.
