The Geology of Lydick Bog

Our region’s geological history, from the limestone formed when the land was underwater, to the more recent glacial activity, all shaped the landscape we know today.
Lydick Bog Nature Preserve is home to several unique glacial features, particularly the bog itself which is part of the St. Joseph Kettle Lake Corridor left behind by the last glaciation period. Join us on April 18 @ 2:30pm EDT to learn all about why Lydick Bog is such a unique place!
This hike will be led by Volunteer Naturalist Jim Spier, whose knowledge of local geology will guide you through Lydick Bog with a new lens and appreciation for how our local ecosystems were formed.
- What to Bring: Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. We encourage you to bring your own water bottle as there is no potable water at this location.
- Length: About 1.7 miles. The trail to the bog (0.3 miles) is compacted gravel and boardwalk; the upland trail (1.4 miles) has some small inclines along dirt paths.
- Weather Policy: Rain or shine. Event will be cancelled in inclement weather. No rain date.
