Meadowbrook Monday: Bittersweet Berries
December 5, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm CST
Free

Join us as we remove bittersweet berries on the first and third Monday of every month as we work on a variety of projects at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve to improve and beautify the preserve. December 5th between 9am-12pm we will be focusing on removing invasive species, which crowd out our native plants and reduce biodiversity. Come out to learn how to identify the oriental bittersweet. This invasive, perineal, woody vine was brought here because of its beautiful Bittersweet Berries. It has become a detriment to our native forests by overgrowing in trees’ canopies (blocking their sun) and wrapping around their trunks (restricting trunk growth and nutrient access), overtime wiping out long-standing native trees.
Be prepared to work outside and dress appropriately for the weather. We will provide all the necessary equipment and gear, as well as granola bars and water, although we encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle. Feel free to stay as little or as long as you’d like. If you are new to Meadowbrook Monday, please fill out the Volunteer Application and Liability Waiver before the event. We will also have extra forms available on site. All ages welcome! Let us remove these bittersweet berries!
Please dress appropriately for the weather and come prepared with protective footwear, long pants, long sleeves, hat, and sunscreen: we’ll be working outside! There may be poison ivy, mosquitoes and ticks; we will have bug spray and TecNu on hand for your protection.
- Forgot to fill out an application?
No worries, we will have hard copies for you at this volunteer event!
