Great Marsh Hike with Ecologist Doug Botka
August 19, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm CDT
Free
Take a hike at Beverly Shores Great Marsh on Friday, August 19th at 3pm! Along the coastal shores of Lake Michigan where the tall grasses grow, Beverly Shores houses the Great Marsh: the vast wetland that once paralleled the shoreline from Gary to Michigan City. A variety of waterfowl and wading birds are common, and sandhill cranes have recently begun nesting here.
Explore this unique wetland habitat with Doug Botka, Staff Ecologist at Shirley Heinze. Identify several plant species, learn about the Great Marsh history, and discuss the restoration progress that is growing for future generations. Along the hike, you can expect to see a variety of wildflowers and pollinators. This hike will be off the beaten path, so come prepared for a unique and rare adventure with Ecologist Doug Botka at the helm.
While the Great Marsh is a beautiful habitat to experience, we ask that you carefully read the following safety requirements before RSVPing:
- For your safety, please wear sturdy, waterproof rain boots, long pants, and sleeves.
- Please note that the tall grasses are coarse to the touch, and you must wear durable long sleeves and long pants with boots in order to navigate the Great Marsh area.
- Terrain is rough, uneven, and muddy. Tripping hazards include logs underfoot, often not visible
- Be prepared to be off-trail throughout the duration of the hike.
- Other hazards include stinging plants and insects, ticks, and heat exhaustion/heat stroke. Wearing long pants/sleeves, bringing plenty of water, and following safety instructions from the hike leader will minimize these risks.
If you are unable to meet the above safety requirements, we ask that you please do not sign up for this hike (not to worry, we’ll be offering many more hikes!)
This event will meet at the Lagoni Trailhead of Beverly Shores, located at 500 E Bellevue Ave. Please note there is limited parking, and you may have to park along the road.
There is a max of 10 guests on the marsh so don’t forget to RSVP your spot today!
