Shirley Heinze Land Trust and Harbor Country Hikers (HCH) are teaming up for our next hike. The “Walk-N-Talk” through Lydick Bog will be led by Mari Patis, Programs Coordinator at Shirley Heinze Land Trust and will take us out onto a bog walkway and over the rolling hills of kame moraines, remnants of the latest Ice Age. During the hike, Mari will share some interesting facts about bogs, kettle holes and the history of the Lydick Bog Nature Preserve.

Lydick Bog, a dedicated Indiana state nature preserve located in South Bend, protects one of the last remaining sphagnum bog habitats in Indiana. Many interesting plant species characteristic of bogs have been identified, including winterberry, tamarack, large cranberry and carnivorous species like round-leaved sundew and pitcher plant. Other wetland types here include marsh, a large riparian corridor, and several kettle hole wetlands.

HCH has an All-Terrain Rollator which may be reserved for use on our hikes. Reservations are made by Emailing harborcountryhikers@gmail.com on a first-come first-served basis. This will be a challenging hike to try our rollator due to the rolling hills.

Wear long pants (preferably tucked-in), a sun hat, sturdy shoes or boots and insect repellent and bring plenty of water. Light precipitation and hot or cold weather don’t ordinarily lead us to call off hikes, but health-threatening temperature extremes and lightning can be causes for cancellation. In case of inclement weather the day of the hike, check our website, harborcountryhikers.com, or our Facebook page for notice of cancellation or rescheduling.
