Hoophouse Help @ Oases Botanic Gardens

Join us on April 15th as we partner with Oases Botanic Gardens, a local community garden program in Gary to assist with installation of their new hoophouse shade area! Volunteers will work as a team to stretch and secure a protective tarp over the structure, providing a space for volunteers and visitors to escape from the sun and heat as they work. This project will help to empower community members to grow a variety of organic foods, further supporting Oases Botanical Gardens’ goal of addressing food insecurity and limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Key Responsibilities

Work together with staff and other volunteers to align and secure shade tarp over hoophouse frame.

Follow basic installation instructions and staff guidance.

Assist with setup tasks as needed like holding materials, and problem-solving as a team.

Ensure the shade tarp is evenly distributed and properly secured to ensure long-term use.
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, pull, squat, bend, and hold material overhead for short periods.

Comfortable with ladder work.

Comfortable working outdoors.

No prior construction experience required.
Why Your Participation Matters
The hoophouse will significantly increase Oases Botanical Gardens’ capacity to grow fresh produce for the community by providing garden workers & volunteers a shelter from temperature extremes and unpredictable weather conditions, two things that are all too common in northwestern Indiana. This project will also help to strengthen community resilience through shared agricultural resources and production.
