Green Friday Seed Sowing – Volunteer Event @ Beverly Shores/Great Marsh

Give the gift of a Green Earth this Black Friday!

Skip the crowds, reconnect with nature, and make a difference by sowing native wildflower seeds at the Great Marsh as we continue re-greening and restoring the wetlands in this unique and beautiful habitat. Come out between 1pm-3pm Central Time to assist our Stewardship Staff while chatting with them about the flora, fauna, and exciting future of the marsh!

On Black Friday we will take those seeds and broadcast them over a large area in Beverly Shores to restore degraded habitats. Late winter is the best time to sow native seeds so they can stratify. Stratification is the period of cold that is needed to break the seed coat. The freezing, thawing, and precipitation helps to work the seeds closer to the ground to ensure seed-to-soil contact, and the snow cover helps to hide the seeds from hungry seed-eating critters.

We will provide all the necessary equipment and gear, as well as granola bars and water, although we encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle. Feel free to stay for as little or long as you’re able.

Meet staff and our other dedicated volunteers at the intersection of Wells Road and Beverly Drive; parking will be available on the south side of Beverly Drive. Parking is limited so we strongly encourage volunteers to carpool.
