Dune and Swale Hike

Explore the dynamic landscape of dunes and swales on this guided hike through one of nature’s most striking and diverse ecosystems. Shaped by wind, water, and time, dune and swale systems form a series of sandy ridges and low, often wet areas that support a wide variety of plants and animals.

As we move through the landscape, we’ll examine how these landforms were created and how differences in elevation, soil moisture, and exposure influence the types of species that thrive in each zone.

After we explore Seidner, we will drive a short distance to Ivanhoe South and get to know the dune and swale habitat there.

This hike encourages close observation and curiosity, offering insight into the connections between geology, hydrology, and ecology. Suitable for all experience levels. Please wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather and walking conditions.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate; suitable for most ages. The Seidner trail is 1.3 miles, and the Ivanhoe South trail is 0.6 miles.
