Cicadapalooza!

June 8 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

Free

cicada event posterCelebrate cicadas and learn about the science and mystery of the local Brood XIII with Cicadapalooza!

Meadowbrook Nature Preserve is one of the few spots in Northwest Indiana that is home to a significant population of these periodical cicadas. They’ll emerge May-June before laying eggs, which will hatch and return to the ground, not to be seen for another 17 years.

Stop by anytime between noon and 3pm Central Time at Meadowbrook to join activities, including:

  • Cicada Searches: walk around the preserve to find cicadas in the wild
  • Cicada Safari App: help researchers and track the cicadas you find through the Cicada Safari App (available on the Apple Store / Android)
  • Close-Ups of Cicadas: observe cicadas up-close, including their shells and cicadas in different life stages
  • Cicada Crafts: make an origami cicada to take home with you or create a cicada collage
  • Cicada Stickers: a limited edition sticker will be available for anyone who attends the event!

Add “cicadas” to your list of 2024 natural phenomenon (along with the solar eclipse and northern lights) with Shirley Heinze Land Trust! RSVP to let us know you’ll be “buzzing” in.

Fun Facts about Cicadas:

  • There are more than 3,000 cicadas species around the world. Broods can consist of multiple species.
  • There are several broods across the mid to eastern United States, each on their own periodical cycle of 13 or 17 years.
  • Cicadas are harmless to humans and will not bite, sting, or attack you (although they may accidentally fly into you).
  • Cicadas feed on the sap of tree roots while underground—so, healthy forests allow cicadas to continue living on.
