Calling Frog Survey Workshop
February 10, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm CST

Sign up at the Calling Frog Survey website.
The abundance and distribution of frogs over time is an important indicator of the health of aquatic ecosystems, as frogs are very sensitive to changes in their environment. Land managers utilize these indicator species as an early warning sign of a declining habitat. By monitoring frog populations, community scientists can be a critical resource for land managers and herpetologists to collect large amounts of data that would otherwise be unattainable.
What Is A Calling Frog Survey?
A calling frog survey is a rather simple endeavor. Participants only need to learn the unique calls of the 13 species of frogs and toads that occur in the Chicago wilderness region. Observers attend one educational webinar and then listen for frogs on three separate evenings in the spring, each lasting for about one to two hours. Monitors will soon become amazed by the vast richness of amphibian life at night.
Workshops for Beginning and Experienced Monitors
Training workshops are for both beginning & experienced monitors. We’ll teach and review the calls of our 13 frog and toad species, help monitors find survey sites, and discuss the monitoring protocol. Experienced monitors are encouraged to attend, in order to learn any protocol changes, obtain data sheets, review frog calls, and share lessons learned from last year.
Virtual Training Workshop Dates 2021:
This year’s workshops will be held virtually, hosted by the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, which coordinates the survey. Registration links for each workshop are listed at the Calling Frog Survey website here. Registration is free, but will be required to access the Zoom meeting link for each workshop. Please register by noon on the day before each workshop, if not earlier. After registering, you should receive a confirmation email with the meeting link.
Monitor in Northwest Indiana:
To find a monitoring route in Northwest Indiana after you attend this workshop, you may email Sarah Barnes, Programs Manager at Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Sarah coordinates monitoring routes on our preserves, and can help you find a route near you.
