Adopt-A-Trail & Preserve Steward Training

April 11 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm CDT

Join our Adopt-A-Trail (AAT) and Preserve Steward (PS) training session, held on April 11 from 5pm-6:30pm. Today, more than 3,000 acres across Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Starke, and Marshall counties are permanently protected. With a total of 20 conservation areas in Northwest Indiana, Shirley Heinze is in search of volunteers that are willing to be the eyes and ears of a chosen nature preserve.

Program Details:

Anyone can become an Adopt-A-Trail OR Preserve Steward. If you already enjoy walking any Shirley Heinze’s trail, help play an important role in providing feedback! This program requires you to visit a preserve of your choosing at least once a month to serve as the eyes and ears at a chosen conservation area in Northwest Indiana. For example, stewardship tasks include communicating trail conditions, taking photos of flowering plants/animal footprints, picking up litter and removing obstructions from the trail. You may also take on small projects that assist our Stewardship Team.

Our team will be hosting a training session on April 11 from 5pm-6:30pm. Furthermore, all current AAT and PS volunteers are encouraged to attend the callout to be introduced, to renew their term commitment, and to learn about new opportunities and projects. Becoming an Adopt-A-Trail Steward is a 6-month commitment, whereas becoming a Preserve Steward requires a 1-year commitment and a previous term served as an Adopt-A-Trail Steward.

Can’t make the date?

No problem! Shirley Heinze Volunteer Coordinator Jim Haniford will work with you individually, if need be, to get you started.

Haven’t visited any of our preserves?

Let’s schedule a date to visit a preserve of your choice, link to preserves: Shirley Heinze Conservation Areas,  and our stewardship can provide more information on how to start!

Already an Adopt-A-Trail Steward or Preserve Steward?

If available, attend this training and renew your 2024 Commitment Form! Located in the upstairs conference room at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve on April 11 at 5pm-6:30pm.
