This summer, Shirley Heinze Land Trust proudly welcomed its largest-ever cohort of summer interns–twelve college students representing a wide range of academic disciplines and interests. As part of our broader Student Experiences in Conservation program, these internships provided hands-on, real-world experience in fields like ecological restoration, environmental science, and community outreach.
Thanks to the generous support of the Flora Richardson Foundation and other dedicated funders and partners, these summer internships provided students with the opportunity to make tangible contributions to conservation efforts across Northwest Indiana. Some interns joined through Shirley Heinze’s competitive application process, while others came to us through partnerships with institutions, such as Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame.
Throughout the summer, interns engaged in a diverse array of projects at Shirley Heinze preserves and community locations–from water quality monitoring and GIS mapping to restorative farm practices and native seed collection. Each student brought unique skills and perspectives, helping to advance our mission and that of our regional partners.
The Student Experiences in Conservation season culminated in a special celebration at the Dunes Acres Clubhouse, where more than 45 guests, including partner organizations, academic advisors, Shirley Heinze staff and board members, and friends and family of our interns, gathered to hear the interns present their work. The presentations showcased not only the impressive range of projects completed but also the personal growth and learning that each student experienced. From navigating field research challenges to developing public outreach strategies, the interns spoke with clarity, confidence, and passion for conservation.
We are incredibly proud of what these young professionals have accomplished and are grateful to all who made this summer possible.
