Volunteers are the heart of our organization. Individuals from various walks and stages of life, generously donate their time and talents. They are essential to all aspects of our work, from projects out in the community and on our preserves, to serving as board, advisory council, and committee members, volunteering their time and professional expertise.

Local agencies, clubs, and businesses also contribute by encouraging their members and employees to get involved in the community. We’re grateful for these volunteer partnerships, which include ArcelorMittal USA, Cargill, Dig the Dunes, Indiana Dunes Tourism, Indiana Toll Road, Nipsco, Rotary Valpo Satellite Club, and others.

This year, volunteers with the Indiana Toll Road are helping to restore the original windmill at Barker Woods Nature Preserve. Rob Perkins, an ITR employee, has volunteered his time to restore the windmill pump and the fan blades, and has plans to reinstall the restored windmill next spring with the assistance of others at ITR.

Indiana Dunes Tourism and Cargill helped us get our saw-whet owl banding station off the ground, and over 600 hours of volunteer time are spent on this project alone annually!

These collective efforts to preserve the natural world in our region are truly inspiring! We are grateful.
